In our field, we tend to get a lot of weird questions, and last week, I got a question that I never thought was going to be asked in my whole life hence never took the time to research for the answer. My patient named Joey asked, “Doc, is it true that shoe size is really correlated with the length of the penis?”

Well, it has never been a practice of mine to guess the answers to patient’s questions, no matter how absurd or how weird, medicine is close to being an exact science and thereby warrants a close to an exact answer. I replied, “I really don’t know, but please give me some time to do some research on it.” Well, after careful research, Joey, here’s the answer:

Popular myth suggesting that you can get an idea of a man’s penis size by his shoe size has been “busted” by two British urologists, where the penile length of 104 men were measured in an attempt to relate to their shoe size. They found that there was no significant connection between the two. This study appears in the issue of British Journal of Urology International.

ALTHOUGH: A group of Greek researchers claim to have found a link between the length of a man’s penis to his index finger. They came to this conclusion by measuring various aspects of the genitalia of 52 healthy men under 40 and matched those measurements to other characteristics of the men, including their age, height, weight, body mass index, waist / hip ratio, and index finger length. The only measurement that showed some relation was the length of the penis and the length of the index finger. The longer the length of the index finger, the longer the penis appeared to be. This however doesn’t mean that they are equal in length, they are merely proportional. With regards to the exact ratio, it is yet to be studied. This research can be found in the September 2002 issue of the journal of Urology (Urology. 2002; 60: 485-491).
