The Doctor Is In… (insane)

They say that health is wealth and we take great measures to keep our proper state of health. But sometimes, even though we try our best to keep in tip-top health, we still get sick. And when we lose our perfect health, we tend to lose our patience also and tend to hate everything (and everyone) around us. Probably you hate being a patient because you hate waiting in line for the doctor to see you, or you hate the pharmacists when it takes them too long to get the simple medications that we usually get. You think it is hard being sick? Well, I’d beg to disagree. I say, it’s harder being a doctor.

I still remember a time when I was sick and couldn’t go to my clinic to see my patients. The nurses told me that after they told my waiting patients that I was sick and couldn’t come, they made comments like, ”What? He’s a doctor and he got sick?!?”

Whatever the matter may be, people tend to see doctors as immortal beings that do not get sick, or worse, have no right to complain of anything.

I had another doctor friend who can’t even eat his lunch because he had so many patients waiting in line. Sometimes when I visit him during lunch time, I would see him hurriedly munching his favorite can of mixed nuts as already his ”lunch meal” because he only gave himself 15 minutes to eat. After seeing my colleague, it just dawned on me, we are all turning NUTS!

Our profession is slowly turning us into crazy people. Well, that’s good news for psychiatrists: for the basic reason that “it takes one to know one.”, but not for the rest of us… NO, NO, NO!

Working in the healthcare setup makes a simple everyday occurrence for non-healthcare workers seem like a dose of stupidity. Let me explain: Most of the patients we see in our clinics come for consultation and then ask us to make them doctor’s notes for their employers because they cannot go to work because of the fact that they got sick. Well, imagine those who work in the field of healthcare—people like nurses, midwives and health technicians—how do they skip work when they get ill? They tell their boss that they cannot go to the HOSPITAL because they are SICK?!? That’s kind of an illogical statement, huh?

I guess no work is really easy, although one thing is for sure, that the medical profession is one tough field to crack. If you still don’t think so, ask Meredith Grey of Grey’s Anatomy or Dr House.
