Today, Contact lenses are being sold in the market like popping mushrooms. They are available not only for people with eye sight problems, but also just about to anyone and everyone who wants to put “glam and color” in their eyes.

What are Contact Lenses anyway?

A contact, or simply contact lens is a lens placed in the eye. Contact lenses are considered medical devices and it can be used to correct the vision, cosmetic or even for therapeutic reasons. People choose to wear contact lenses for many reasons. Aesthetics and cosmetics are often the reason to motivate people who would avoid the use of glasses or if they want to change the appearance of their eyes.

Are there many types of these Contact lenses?

Soft Lenses –   Most of the soft lenses that are sold today are disposable, so it can be thrown away after using them for a while. Having a new pair of soft contact lenses means less chance of infection, less cleaning, and more comfort. Also, one of the on going trend today is the “Colored Contact Lenses.” These are soft contact lenses that has bolder colors. They are usually used for aesthetic and cosmetic purposes.

Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses –   These lenses are more rigid than soft contact lenses. Made with silicone material, rigid gas permeable lenses let oxygen through them to the cornea. It is possible to have a clearer sight with the rigid gas permeable contacts compared with the soft lenses. They are easy to care for and are very durable. You can get a type for a more prolonged use.

Bifocal Lenses –     There are variety of bifocal contact lenses. It takes a professional fitting and evaluation to determine which bifocal design suits your needs.If you have problem with your vision both far and near, bifocal lenses are the solution. Bifocal contact is both near prescription and distance prescription. Contact bifocals are available in types of gas permeable rigid and soft lenses.

Healthy Habits to Remember :

  • Remember to always wash your hands before handling contact lenses to avoid infection.
  • Remove the lenses immediately and consult your eye doctor if your eyes become red, vision changes, or irritated.
  • Always follow your eye doctor’s instructions and the directions of the label for the proper use of contact lenses and lens care products.
  • Use of contact lenses and solutions recommended by your doctor.
  • Use the rub and rinse method to clean your contact lenses. This method will be taught by your eye doctor.
  • Clean and disinfect your lenses properly according to label instructions provided with their lens care products.
  • Clean, rinse and dry your lens case lenses everytime you remove them. Remember that  contact with cases of lenses can be a source of bacterial growth.
  •  Every 3-6 months, change the container of your contact lenses.
